A good chunk of their "trauma" was being intensely peeved with Adolf
Hitler,
who signed a peace treaty with the Soviets within a couple of days of
Khalkin-Gol. The Japanese weren't pre-disposed to helping out the
Germans by
invading the Soviet Union from the east.
