Correction to MW Article II
Mecca Battle Carrier, TMF = 155, NPV = 529
The Mecca Class Battle Carriers are the largest mass-produced design to
be
built by the IF. They are designed to be the core of squadrons capable
of
overpowering the defences of whole colonial systems. The ships carry
four
squadrons of fighters, giving them a similar punch to a light carrier,
but
in addition have enough offensive capability to destroy a patrol
cruiser.
This class carries sufficient defences to survive attacks from
cruiser-sized opponents but is not expected to trade blows with capital
ships. It is the most ambitious class ever produced at the converted
heavy
merchantman yard at Bathsheba. It remains to be seen whether this
innovative design will be successful. Critics point out that it has
limited
hanger space and it is woefully undergunned as a heavy raider having a
similar strike capability to a Saladin heavy destroyer. It is debatable
whether a cheap light carrier and a destroyer might have carried out the
same function more efficiently and at less cost. Nevertheless, whatever
its
drawbacks, this class represents a significant achievement by the
Federation and the experienced gained from their production will
undoubtedly serve the IF well in future designs.
