IFV = Infantry Fighting Vehicles
APC = Armoured Personnel Carrier
The theory:
An APC's role is to function as an armoured bus, bringing infantry to
the
battlefield, where they dismount to fight on foot.
Lightly protected against artillery splinters and small arms. Armed with
a
heavy machine gun at most.
An IFV should allow the infantry to fight mounted shooting out of
gunports.
It also is designed as a fire support vehicle. Armed with an autocannon
and
an anti-tank missile. Armoured against autocannon or more.
In practice, APC tend to acquire more weapons and armour, drifting into
a
fighting role, whereas APC are too under-armed to serve in real
fighting.
But there are others on this list who can tell you moree about the
practice
;-)
Greetings
Karl Heinz
