Is the signature of a walker actually that much smaller than that of a
tank
?
Looked at from directly above, yes, but even at moderate angles of
inclination, a human-shaped walker has a significant size.
And don't forget they cast a shadow comparable to their height (OK, this
depends on the time of day)

And some Battletech minis, seen from above are as large as some
Battletech
vehicles ;-)
