Sorry, I know it's an old thread.  Just wanted to mention one of the
most 
interesting Military SF uses for Nanos I ever encountered.  It was in
the 
book "Side Show" by Rick Shelley.

The technology was called a "Soaker."  It was a large gauze bandage,
treated 
with antibiotics and anesthetic, IIRC, but also embedded with Nanobots. 

These little guys were programmed to go in, get the shrapnel, bring it
to 
the surface where it could be removed, and also start working on
repairing 
tissue damage.	Quite an interesting idea.  I don't think it would
affect 
game play at all, but you could use it as the PSB for your medics....
