The OU has often been described as the "UN's catspaw in the outer
reaches".
How much the OU co-operates with the UN, how much it is controlled by
the
UN,
these are all subjects of rumour rather than hard info.

It's thought that the OU provides "plausible deniability" to UN covert
ops.
This is rather contradicted by the OU's friendly relations with the
Alarishi,
who it's said have an allergy to the UN. On the gripping hand, both the
IAS
and
the OU do a significant amount of long-distance exploration, and it's
difficult
to credit that the OU doesn't co-operate with the UNSC in this regard.

What *is* true is that the UN has stepped in a few times where the OU
had
had its claim jumped by two of the Big Four acting together. Whether
this
was out of self-interest, a desire to break up an unholy alliance, or
just to keep the peace is unknown.

OU ships regularly serve with UN squadrons - the OU being probably the
only
power apart from the IAC to actually meet its treaty obligations in this
regard.
