Crayon is usally based on a wax medium. Which outgasses, and gums up
things.

The R&D on the pen wasn't charged for, the guy who did it had a lot of
cash, and did it out of interest. IIRC he sold about 200 pens at $450
each, enough to cover costs of manufacture, not amortise the R&D.
