For me: weapon ranges compared with table sizes.

25mm for fantasy - being in contact matters a lot, as does precise
relative positioning.

15mm for SF - precise positions don't usually matter, but if you're
going to be moving in and out of effective weapon envelopes you need a
lot of space.
