The Japanese DD is definitely derived from Gundam, specifically the
Zeon Musai-class light cruiser. This site has a nice page on the
class:

http://mechadomain.gundam.com/gundam/msgundam/musai.htm

Gundam has a lot of nice spaceship designs - I'd very much like to
see a not-White Base model.

Devolution is very real to me.

Whenever I hear the "Odd Couple" theme, I get this image of Dennis
Rodman borrowing Marge Schott's toothbrush.

If you're up to a little adventuring, go to
http://www.bandai.co.jp/products/products1.html

The page is in Japanese, so expect gibberish unless you have fonts
installed.
In the upper right are two pull-down menubars. On the lower bar, select
the
second line (the first line is the default line). Click the small button
to the
right of that bar.

All Bandai model kits in production will be displayed with onscreen
JPEGS. They
still have a large line of $5 Yamato models, generally about 3-4 inches
long and
many of them are quite nice, given that they're plastic.

Also,
The "official" yamato site is at http://yamato.channel.or.jp/
The "official" gundam page is http://www.gundam.channel.or.jp/

Good luck! (Might be easier if you had japanese fonts and could read
them, but
you should be able to find something interesting anyway).
