My 2 kopins worth:

>From the number of USAians I've given information to regarding
emigrating to Australia if the US dissolves into internal chaos,
I'd say that the US going pfffft isn't that unbelievable.
(No names, no pack drill).

I happen to believe the US would be strong enough to handle
just about anything - no-one who's remotely sane would want
a repeat of the 1860's.

But then again, there are plenty of militia, religious fanatics,
and racists of all colours who aren't remotely sane. It appears
from this furriner's viewpoint that there are just as many
eccentrics in the US per head of population, from the merely dotty
to the monster raving loony, as there are in the UK.

The difference is that in the UK they write letters to the Times,
or if really provoked, form the Monster Raving Loony Party.*
In the US they go armadillo and shoot at any Federal authority
that comes near.

The idea of a curfew to stop racist rioting in a major city - as
has happened recently in the US - reinforces the image. Though
in Oz, we did have the same thing last year, in a town with a
population in excess of 100 (just).

* - The Monster Raving Loony Party exists, BTW, and some
of its policies have been adopted over the years by major parties.
