Here's what I was planning:

4 sections of 6 ft by 2 ft plywood

2 different sets of support brackets -
1 short set for joining 2 sections for making a 4 ft by 6 ft table
1 long set for making the full 6 ft by 8 ft table

The supports run along the short sides of the 6x2 sections, and one 
down the center.

If you want to get fancy, you could back each individual section with 
1/2 in by 1 1/2 in boards for extra rigidity. The center bracket may 
not be necessary in this case.

Set the whole thing atop any sized table or other convenient support.
