I suspect that these have might already have been suggested but anyway
...

Try filling the hole with a two part epoxy glue and supporting the model
either end while it dries (Humbrol enamel tins are almost exactly the
right height to support a spaceship on a 'standard' plastic hex base).

Alternatively, snap / cut off the smaller diameter nib on top of the
post and then drill out the existing hole to match the thickness of the
post.
