One solution is to make counters.
Use a small base, appropriate for your scale, glue on a small lettered,
or numbered bead. Easy to get at any craft or sewing store. Decorate as
you would any base, flocking and building up to hide all but the top of
the bead. Should be unobtrusive enough for most people. If not use
figures/terrain instead of beads, and just remember what they mean. For
example the base with the 3 stones for command, the ones with an
discarder missle tube are shaken.
