Glen,

Believe it or not, for the Shadow ships in B5, Foundation used a scanned

dogs nose as the texture for shadow ships, then layered and animated the

texture to make the skin seem alive.  

When trying to reproduce the look, I have used flat black paint on my 
ships, then sprayed gloss black with a detailing airbrush through a
masking
screen to produce the highlights on areas of the skin.
