G'day guys,
Not really about what blocks sonar, just something interesting I
stumbled
over today. Just finished a paper which indicates that Humpback whales
'sing' in order to locate and transmit info on scales of 5 nautical
miles
(about 9.25 km) and apparently have even more specialised pulses which
allow for tracking/location of individuals on the scale of 70+nm
(129.5+km)
- and that was without using convergence zones/thermocline bouncing to
increase range! I believe this gives them something like the equivalent
or
better of military sonar - talk about save on long distance phone calls
;)
Just something you might find passingly interesting
Beth
