You can play quite happily with FT for years.

MT adds a few systems (none necessary) and two alien races (neither
balanced
point-wise against the human ships).

FTFB1 adds vector (Newtonian) movement, an improved (but more
complicated)
ship design system, and very different designs and design philosophies
for
each of the 4 major human powers, and some new systems.  MT is probably
not
needed to upgrade to FTFB1, either. (While MT is out of print, other
players
will probably answer your questions to get you over the hump).

FTFB2 is currently predicted for April, 2000.  It will revamp the two
alien
races from MT and add a third.	You will probably need FTFB1 to enjoy
FTFB2.
