There are some compelling arguments for using an
icoscahedron (a 20 sided die) for a world map.
Notably from Bucky Fuller, the fellow who invented
the geodesic sphere. Do a web search for
"dymaxion map".
Of course, this has been used in Traveller for decades.
For links between stars or interstellar empires,
a cuboctahedron or "vector equilibrium" is useful.
This is due to close packing of spheres.
