Sounds like the classic SHADOWLINE by Glen Cook.
The novel is a futuristic depiction of a battle to the
death between two mercenary bands over a valuable mining
site on a mercury like world.

If you read a little deeper, you notice that the entire thing
is based on Norse mythology, specifically Ragnarok, the twilight
	of the gods.

In the novel, they have such advanced medical technology.
One mercenary army sends "Valkyries" to observe all battles.
If they see any soldier who are particularly valiant, they
snatch his dead body after the battle is over, take him to
the mercenary army's HQ and bring him back to life.
Then he is offered a job in the army.
Most take them up on the offer,
[a] after all, the soldier owes them his life
[b] it is quite an honor to be choosen

Thus the mercenary army is composed of crack elite troops
selected from all the armies in known space.
