Shafir: Alternate Design (Feel free to use it if you like)
This design satisfies the following:
1) Same mass
2) partial streamlining (to allow assaults)
3) carries fewer troops than the other big assault ship - otherwise why
the heck buy the big one? It needs shuttles. This one wouldn't have.
And the mass difference in troops was about 30%. You'd have taken the
original design (though flawed) over the big ship.
4) Lighter armed than Tony's design - TROOPSHIPS SHOULD NOT BE
ENCOURAGED TO FIGHT. Still has PDS and 1's to drive off small threats.
5) You might be crash landing. You're loaded with expensive troops and
kit. Don't put on a weak hull. Put on a strong hull. It eats mass, but
the troopies will thank you. The armour serves a similar purpose, plus
helps slow the first threshold which the troopies will thank you for.
6) Capacity (at Jeff's last figures): 8 mass = 800,000 kg. Which is 1600
troops without any kit. Or, perhaps more usefully, it is probably 4
platoons plus vehicles and personal kit - so about 150 men plus APCs and
such. One full company.
(As an aside, this indicates the assault ship is carrying a mechanized
battalion or 3 companies plus a bit at 27 cargo to troops - which is
about right for my thinking).
