Seek Shelter
A SGII scenario for variable size forces, with few or no vehicles.
An ESU platoon and their NAC counterparts have both been inserted as
recon patrols on an uninhabited world. What their superiors failed to
mention when giving the mission briefing is that there are periodic,
violent meteor showers on the planet. One of these has just begun.
Fortunately for the NAC, they've just seen a mushroom-shaped giant rock
formation up ahead, which should cover them from the falling meteors.
Unfortunately, the ESU platoon has seen the same formation, and also
intends to use it for cover. There's enough space underneath the rock
for one platoon - no more. The rock formation is in the middle of a
rocky meadow surrounded by forest.
The "mushroom" is in the center of the table. The two forces start off
on their baselines. The basic tactical decision is whether to run for
the rocks (and thus expose your troops to the fire of the other side) or
to wait for the enemy to do the same. But time is of the essence. On
the first turn, 1d6 meteors fall at random locations on the board. The
next turn, 2d6 meteors fall, and so on. And every turn, every unit that
is not in cover has to take a confidence test at a threat level of 3, +2
for every meteor that has hit any troops in the force (whether it caused
casualties or not). Troops must also take confidence tests at +4 if a
meteor hits within 6" of any of the troops in the unit. Results of
tests are as normal, except that Routed troops head for the rock
formation rather than their own baseline. Treat meteor hits as General
Purpose Explosive shells from Small delivery systems (3" radius, d8
impact). The rock formation offers soft cover if you're behind one of
the small rocks underneath the "mushroom" cap. Troops behind the "stem"
cannot be seen or hit, of course.
The victor is the one with troops left at the end of the game. In this
game, I expect that one side will cede the game before all of his troops
are gone, as it will be difficult for an outnumbered, low-morale force
to take the rock formation from opponents.
