I tend to agree. I know of many people that are still very romantic.

And as for the comment on the buying a girl's affections.
It has been my experience at least that women don't want to be bought
anymore.
But they are practically starved for attention. And
Roses/chochalates/cards
are just one avenue to give them attention. I've never seen such as a
purchase of affection, but a proper expression of affection of the guy's
part. Which women like.

Of course, women being women this will never hold true in all cases, and
can have the opposite effect. ;)
