it is possible to imagine a design where you had a tower of all-round
turrets, each stacked on another, like a wedding cake.

alternatively, think of a stack of discs, like a Tower of Hanoi, with a
gun mount which can go round each terrace:

	    |---| #
	|-----------| #
    |-------------------| #
|---------------------------|

where a # is a gun platform. all these guns have 360 fire arcs. this may
look daft, but if the mount is just a reflector for a beam generator
buried inside the hull, it's practical.
