John,

As far as I can remember, Gen.Custer had 5 troops with him, the other 6
troops of the 7th were on the flanks (3 per side) and around 2 miles
away.
These 5 Troops were the C, E, F, I , and L troops. They did not return
for
active duity, so they were listed as missing in action, and were not
replaced untill Dec 1917. So for 41 years the 7th Cavalry was missing 5
Troops.
