Not to justify a view of listers as argumentative, but City Watches
and such existed far back into the Rennaisance at least, and they
were definite precursors to the Police of today. There may even be
examples that far predate that - in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if
the Romans had police like formations given their high level of
law and organization.
So, there's your pint. Feel free to collect it next time you are in
Ottawa.
