Have tried wave guns once or twice favorite option is to put them on 
a cloaked ship right the orders and pray : )
Once managed to get 2 of them alonside a capital ship when they 
decloaked, made a nice mess.  Tend to use the smallest class ship I 
can fit them on, ie there expendable.
