Mounting fighters

Subject: Mounting fighters

I'm finally getting around to dealing with the fighter minis for FT and
am
looking for some ideas on mounting. Personally, I'm tossing the Geo-hex
bases -- will probably cut off the nobs and sand flat for mounting a
larger ship or VTOL. Here is what I thought of:

Building a base with FIMO to fit a recepticle for a d6 and space to pin
3
fighters (I know I can use just 1, but 3 looks better). It could also
be
made with wood and a Dremel tool to carve out the space for the die.
How
has this worked for those who've tried it?

Putting a 1" pin into each fighter and mounting them on a piece of
plasticine on a hex base. Someone in my Silent Death group did this for
his missiles and torps which I copied.	The disadvantage to this is
having
to use 6 fighters on a base and having to count the number before
firing.
But you do get a good physical representation of what's really in the
group on the table.

Any other ideas?
