I think the key here is the false idea that all fire would be
simultaneous.
This would certainly be true for any beam weapon.  Unlike the racing
blaster beams we see in Star Wars.  The firing of a beam weapon would
be...more or less...instant.  You would power up the beam...fire it at
the
speed of light..and recharge the beam.	It would be more or less like
hitting the little push button on the flashlight.  In this case, I don't
see the ability to react to enemy fire, if you were just...a milisecond
slow in responding, (that would be huge), your ship, battery,
fire-con..etc. would be toast before it could return fire.   I think
that
using a simo system would be less realistic rather than more.  Besides,
the
strategy involved in deciding which ships to fire first and next is one
of
the better parts of the game!
