"Armor" by John Steakley

I agree.  "Armor" is a must-read.  I haven't gotten into Stargrunt,
but if you use bugs in your games, this book is packed with ideas.

I wasn't happy with the tangent that Mr. Steakley went off on for the
last third of the book, but I still very much enjoyed it...all three
times...so far.
