Trust the transfer MFD. :-)
Start with Earth to Mars. Use the transfer MFD instructions to pick a
departure time, Use the orbit HUD's reference selector to choose your
orbit round the Sun, and pick a time when prograde-that matches
prograde-Earth. Then burn. Correct once you're effectively under the
Sun's gravitational influence.

That would be great to get all the "real" objects like ISS to cruise the exact real life orbit. Then one could try to make shuttle trips to the station parallel to real life missions...
This is a non-trivial exercise. (i.e. not as far as I know.)
