The problems with formations in my experience are:
(b) when ships start to take drive thresholds, they have to fall out of
formation; this increases the number of effective manoeuvre units you
have, just when the game's already slowing down because you have to make
lots of decisions...

My ships' accelerations tend to go from directly 4 to "lots, in all directions simultaneously".
