one navy (the USN) ever built ships like that, and they were called

Germany and Britain made lots.
Germany built one, the Blucher, and may have built another two later
on, depending on how you argue (the S & G of WWII).

Ordered as Mackensen class, changed to modified design with
15 inch guns 1/1917.
Britain may have
laid down three, the wierd sisters (Glorious, Courageous, and Furious)
but they were not completed as originally designed.
Invincible, Indomitable, Inflexible,
Indefatigable, New Zealand, Lion, Princess Royal,
Queen Mary, Tiger, Renown, Repulse
All of the ships
laid down as battlecruisers were the size of their contemporary
battleships.
Which exchanged armor for boiler plants. Compare the Orions and the Lions.

turrets, 11 inch CT
Lion class battlecruisers
Displ: 26,270 tons normal; 29,680 tons full load
Dim: 700 x 88.5 x 27.5 feet
Prop: Steam turbines, 42 boilers, 4 shafts, 70,000 hp, 27 knots
Crew: 997
Arm: 4 dual 13.5/45, 16 single 4/50, 2 21 inch TT (sub)
Armor: 4-9 inch belt, 1-2.5 inch decks, 3-9 inch barbettes, 9 inch turrets,
10 inch CT
Bow's lengthened for the speed factor and a touch
more beam, but otherwise similar in size. The big
difference is LOTs less armor for boiler plant.
The USN contemplated a class of five that were squarely
between the size of contemporary CA's and BB's, and even finished two
of them.
Which I think in US doctrine were more Large Cruisers.
