As far as I can tell long range fire suppresses, but close assaults decide
battles.  As far as I am concerned a close assault is the only way to
remove an entrenched enemy.

I'd have to check, but does a suppressed squad get fire if the assaulting
squad fails its'  movement roll?

Remember that artillery is your friend.  Call it early and often.
