Well, casualties (although that's easy to cope with--make a small loop of red pipecleaner and put it around a casualty, for instance) and detachments too.  But I agree that if you put multiple figures on a base it'd go faster.  
As far as the artillery / minefield issue, I'd make one fireteam a base and say that the attack affected all the members of the fireteam
