How about a two-layered "sandwich" of card or plastic, with spacers between, for the panel with the iris in it - with the hole for the valve cut out; then a square piece that drops between the layers with the valve itself printed/decaled onto both sides so that it is visible through the hole when inserted. Valve closed: put this piece in place; valve open: lift it out.
