Any idea how the gyrojet got around this?  Was it just so small you didn't have to worry about it?

First-hand experience with countermass weapons and recoilless guns,
including seeing the marks the various countermasses we use can make on
steel plates.

No, today the danger zones behind countermass weapons are typically around
*20* meters in Earth sea-level atmosphere.
