Hi Mike,
I'll try and really answer your question.
Best way to attach steel to brass is with leather straps - DOH! - I
couldn't
help myself.
Actually, soldering won't work. The solder will adhere to the brass but
not
to the steel washer, and if it is a galvanised washer there is a remote
possiblility it will release some nasty fumes (as in poisoness). I know
the
fumes are released when galvanized steel is welded, I doubt soldering
gets
hot enough, but why take a chance?
Super glues work best under tension and poorly under shear. So if the
tube
is crazy glued and then gets knocked, the tube surface will be in shear
with
the hole surface and the bond is likly to break. You could use a thick
superglue and probably be ok if you make a little fillet (bead around
the
base of the tube). Clean the washer with alcohol to remove any oil
residue
from manuafacturing. Don't use any super glue accelerators as that they
make
the bond brittle.
That said, your best bet is epoxy. For this type of bond, 5 minute will
work
but I'd look for J.B.Weld, found in most hardware and auto sections. It
is
the nastiest, grippiest, epoxy I have worked with that is readily
available.
Clean the parts with alcohol so you are sure it is free of redidue. Mix
up
the JB and get a liitle in the hole. Once the tube and the washer are
together, get a little bead of epoxy around the base. While wearing a
rubber
glove (ooooh, rubber!) wet a glove covered finger with alcohol and
smooth
the bead into a nicely radiused fillet. You can clean any epoxy smudges
off
with alcohol and a piece of paper towel. When that's hardened, you will
have
a flight stand that you can drop on the floor and the bond is not going
to
give!
Party on,
Martin
