could use the idea of a group of human colonists, possibly some sort of
scientific community, that stumbled onto the ruins of an alien
civilisation and has reversed engineered some of the alien technology.
 
Something like this gives you humans with potentially understandable
motives, an explanation for how they got the high tech looking ships
(very nice BTW) and futher mystery about the abandonded alien
technology.
