It's worse than that. Regionally it is known as a puma, a cougar, a
mountain lion, a catamount, a painted cat, and a panther (but not to
be confused with a "black panther", which is actually a variant of
leopard/jaguar). That's not counting the name of the critter in native
dialects.

It ranges from northwest British Columbia to Southern Argentina and
Chile.

In North America it's most commonly called a cougar or mountain lion.
