Good point.  While scuttling a ship to deny it to the enemy is a great
policy, it seems to me that it would only be common 1) if there's some
way to get the crew off the ship with a reasonable expectation of
survival, or 2) if they expect that they're all going to be killed if
they surrender anyway.
