Your confusion is understandable; however, the accretion disc was always
in
the distance, ergo the view from the top of the stairs. And of course,
the
original memo's 'in the swirling, incoherent maw that is my
basement,...'

One must avoid relying on the habit of focusing too narrowly in place of
the thought of the whole picture, of course.
