As a house rule, It required a sensor roll of 6 (current damage) to get
the actual number of fighters, but only a 5 to get the type. You know
the fighters are lurking because of the exhaust trails etc. but you
really don't know.  Of course sending you fighters into theirs is
another way to scout>

Roger the footprint issue. But as for Fog of War - given the sensors
needed 
to find/range/hit ships in outer space - I think knowing how many
fighters 
are in a group closing to attack is reasonable. YMMV.
