Since a capital ship usually has both screens and 2-3 times as many

boxes as an equivalent-massed merchant ship, plus at least somewhat

Since screens protect against all non-KV/non-Torp fighters that attack
the
ship in a single turn, the protection given by the screens increases in
direct proportion to the number of such fighters that attack the ship.
