Subject: Ship Class Nomenclature
Reading Schott's Original Miscellany, I came across Wine Bottle Sizes,
and thought that they would make a good series for naming classes, they
are from smallest to largest:
Picolo
Chopine
Filette or Demi
Magnum
Marie Jeanne
Double Magnum
Jeroboam
Rehoboam
Imperial
Methuselah
Salmanazar
Balthazar
Nebuchadnezzar
Melchior
Series would be named after types of wines - for instance the first
series of a line would be the "Burgundy Picolo Escort Class" the second
series would be "Cabernet Picolo Escort Class" while individual ships
would be named after specific vineyards or brands of wine, matching the
series name. Distinctive ships would earn a "year" to the name for
distinguished action: "Dom Perignon '69 of the Champagne Series Magnum
Cruiser Class" or Melcior class "Moet '85" Champagne Series.
