This is really the end point that should be kept at heart.  The system's
generic.  If you want your beams to be like Shadow "ginsu beams" from
B5, or
phasers from Star Trek, or turbolasers from Star Wars, or the "main
guns"
from Yamato/Star Blazers, or lightning bolt wands carried by shipboard
mages
in a Spelljammer knock-off, or rapid-fire weapons of some other genre,
feel
free.  Hell, you can say they're tactical nukes hurled from 12 paces if
you
want.
