'Fraid so- a gill is 1/4 of an Imperial pint. English pubs dispense
whisky
etc in 1/6 gill measures, (unless they've gone over to 25ml) while
Scottish
pubs use 1/5 gill. Formerly, and still in some McGlashanist holdouts,
the
Scottish pub measure was 1/4 gill, leading to the the traditional order
"a
hauf 'na hauf-pint" - a double whisky and a half pint of heavy (beer).
Ah,
it makes me pine for a white puddin supper.
