The atomizer might produce to fine a spray.  If you have an airbrush
there
might be specialized tips for a splatter effect.  I have several models
and
the Aztek I mainly use has a specialized splatter tip - however I
haven't
yet had call to use the one I purchased a while back so I can tell you
if it
works or not.
