Also Gandalf used fireballs or lightning when he battle alone on the
hill 
where the others were seeking him. They observed the flashes of light,
etc. 
Some heavy duty magic went on went Gandalf battled the Balrog as well.
But 
generally speaking Gandalf's spells were subtle and objects of magic
were the 
big guns - the rings, Glamdring, Sting, the broken sword reforged, etc.
