(SG) (DS) Free Worlds Accord, etc.

Subject: (SG) (DS) Free Worlds Accord, etc.

For those that may be interested, here is my attempt at a write up for
ground combat with and against the 13th Spaceborne Assault Team. A lot
of
the statistics I have used for the weapons and vehicles certainly could
be
done differently and there is some seemingly contradictory information
in
the books. The books this information is based on (Until Relieved, Side
Show, Drop Pay) are written by Rick Shelley and published by Ace Books
in
the U.S. (copyright Bill Fawcett and Associates). No infringement on
their
copyrights is intended.

Comments would be appreciated from any interested parties.

Weapons and Military Units of the Terran Sphere circa 5150 CE
(for Dirtside II and Stargrunt II)

Notes on Infantry Equipment

Almost all forces are armed with similar weaponry. Most infantry use
rifles
that fire wire segments from spools, though the specifics of weapons
vary
(battery capacity, wire gauge and length, and weapon weight).
Machineguns
(called Splat Guns) just use heavier wire from much larger spools. Both
types of weapons have very high rates of fire.	Other weapons used are
large
caliber pistols and sniper rifles firing rocket assisted projectiles,
rocket
propelled grenade launchers, and man-portable AA/AT missile launchers.
Troops are equipped with mesh armor that is very effective against
standard
small arms fire over 100 meters range.	Helmets for infantry provide
wide-spectrum vision as well as communication and protection. I rate
the
personal mesh armor as providing d10 protection and allowing 6/d6
movement.
Because of the limited effective range of most small arms, I would class
all
line infantry teams as assault teams while splat gun teams count as APSW
and
missile teams count as combined GMS/L and LAD.

Notes on Supporting Arms

While mortars are known and used (especially by the Schlinal Hegemony)
most
artillery is of the conventional self-propelled sort, firing smoke,
fragmentation, HE, and anti-tank rounds. Conventional tanks are used by
the
Hegemony. All sides use anti-gravity VTOL aerospace fighter-bombers.
These
fighter-bombers carry autocannon, multi-purpose missiles, and deadfall
ordinance and are VERY heavily stealthed but their endurance is somewhat
limited because they require battery packs to power all systems.

Organization

The Accord Defense Force is the principal military force of the Accord
and
controls the major mobile units while individual planetary governments
maintain local defense forces.	The ADF's major ground forces consist of
Mobile Infantry Divisions, Light Infantry Regiments, and Spaceborne
Assault
Teams (SAT). Since the books concentrate on the regiment-sized SATs, I
will
confine my ADF organizational information to these. The smallest line
unit
is the squad of a sergeant, a corporal, and five privates. All are
armed
with Armanoc Mk VI Wire Carbines. One private in each squad is trained
and
equipped as a medic. One private in each squad carries an RPG launcher
in
addition to a carbine.	Two squads in each platoon have a member armed
with
the Dupuy Rocket Rifle instead of the Armanoc carbine.	A line platoon
consists of four squads and a headquarters team of a lieutenant and a
platoon sergeant (28 wire carbines, 4 RPG launchers, and two Dupuy
rifles).
Four platoons, a heavy weapons section (25 troops, 12 splat guns), an
anti-aircraft section (25 troops, 12 Vrerch missile launchers), and a
headquarters section (a captain and 9 others) make up a line company.
According to TO&E, a reconnaissance squad consists of twelve troopers,
ten
armed with wire carbines and two with Dupuy rifles, but with recon
troopers
being what they are, I suspect that there is a good proportion armed
with
splat guns, RPGs, and Vrerchs.	Five recon squads make a recon platoon.
A
complete Spaceborne Assault Team consists of eight line companies, four
recon platoons, an artillery battalion of six batteries (each of 30 men
in
six Havoc SPG and one support vehicle), one Wasp squadron (of 24 Wasps
and
their ground crews, organized into three flights), and a headquarters
unit
(Colonel as CO, Lt. Colonel as XO, two surgeons, and about 200 others).
The
Spaceborne Assault Teams do not have any armored personnel carriers in
their
TO&E, but can have them assigned from other formations for temporary
use.

The Schlinal Hegemony seems to employ combined arms line regiments as
its
primary fighting force. Small scale information is very sketchy, so
most of
this is conjecture, but should be consistent with the information and
hints
given in the books. A light infantry squad consists of 10 men, 9 armed
with
wire rifles, one with a sniper rifle. Three line squads and a
headquarters
squad of 10 men (2 splat guns, 1 sniper rifle, and 2 RPG launchers) make
a
platoon. Three platoons, a weapons platoon (3 AT missile launchers, 3
AA
missile launchers), and a headquarters team make a light infantry
company.
Three light infantry companies plus a headquarters platoon (3 AT missile
launchers, 3 AA missile launchers, 3 RPG launchers) make up a light
infantry
battalion. A heavy infantry battalion is similar to a light battalion,
but
each line squad is only armed wire rifles (only the HQ squads of each
platoon have sniper rifles) and replaces the battalion headquarters
platoon
with a headquarters company armed with 3 AT missile launchers, 3 AA
missile
launchers, 3 RPG launchers, and 9 light mortars. A tank platoon
consists of
three Nova tanks (6 men). An armor company is three platoons plus a
commander's tank (10 Novas). Three armor companies and a support
company
(repair and recovery vehicles plus 9 Floater half-tracks used as
ammunition
carriers) combine to make an armor battalion. A Schlinal Line Regiment
consists of three heavy infantry battalions, one light infantry
battalion,
and two armor battalions. Garrison regiments lack the mortars of line
regiments and only have up to one armor battalion. Armored personnel
carriers (Floater half-tracks) are provided on an as-needed basis from
non-regimental support formations.

No information is yet available on Dogel Worlds' forces.
