Passage At Arms is one of my all-time favorites.
It is sort of a retelling of "Run Silent, Run Deep"
in deep space, but it is incredibly realistic for an SF novel.

The first of the Starfisher Trilogy is good as well,
it is also a retelling of the Norse "Twilight of the Gods".
The leader of the mercenaries is Odin, one eye, two flying
creatures who spy for him, et al.
His relative is Loki, who slays Baldur (wearing a new style
force field) by giving a brother a trick weapon that can
	pierce the field.
The mercenaries have medical technology that can bring the dead
back to life. Their agents observe battles. If a soldier is
especially valorous and dies in battle, the agents snatch the
body, revive them, and offer them a job in the mercenary
band. Oh, yes, the mercenary troops can be brought back from
the dead after battles as well.

Can anybody say "Valkyries and Valhalla?"
