For larger battles, generally adding more players makes things move
along
quite nicely. It sounds as if you might be playing too many ships per
person. The regular rules work fine.

The key to SML defence is escorts - lots of DD hulls to protect those
expensive SDNs. It sounds to me as if your fleet mix may be a little on
the
heavy side.
